How to get to Byron Bay from Ballina Byron Gateway Airport

Home » Ground Transportation » How to get to Byron Bay from Ballina Byron Gateway Airport

There are two main airports for Byron Bay: Ballina BNK and Gold Coast OOL. Given a straight choice, a lot of people use Ballina Byron Gateway Airport as it’s slightly closer to Byron Bay. Plus there’s a decent range of short hop flights from the major Australian hubs of Sydney and Melbourne as well as Newcastle. Ballina Airport is small but, according to its website, is served by a large number of ground transport providers. However, when I started looking at it for my own recent trip with Virgin Australia, I had to narrow down the long list of shuttles to a couple of practical choices – those are in this short article.

Ballina Airport Car Rental

Clearly, the easiest way to get where you’re going is to hire a car. This works well for Byron Bay if you’re staying a bit off the beaten track, you’ve got places to go or you need a car to pick up groceries for your Airbnb. Bear in mind you may have parking charges if you’re staying right in the centre of town. All of the car rental desks are in the arrivals hall of the terminal on the left hand side after you collect your luggage. You can choose from Avis, Hertz, Sixt, Europcar and Budget (Thrifty is also listed, but I couldn’t find its desk in the arrivals hall). I like to use Skyscanner to compare prices, but any aggregator will be able to find you a deal.

Ballina Airport Shuttle Bus

I chose an airport shuttle to get to Byron Bay, for the simple reason I didn’t need a car and wanted the best value transfer. The Ballina Airport official website lists 9 shuttle providers. There is no point in going through the websites of all 9. Some require you to send an email before telling you how much it might cost, and it’s unclear if others are still functioning.

I saw two shuttle companies in active operation for my flight (and I do not have an affiliation with either):

Note: my shuttle company had a desk beside the car rental area in the arrivals hall (you can see the red sign in the picture at the top of this page). I had to wait about 45 minutes after collecting my bag, as they run the shuttle service in batches. There was another (delayed) flight coming in which had a couple of shuttle passengers on it. So you might be waiting around a bit.

Ballina Airport Taxi

Taking a taxi is the most immediate and fastest way to get from Ballina Airport direct to Byron Bay. A taxi will get you from the airport to Byron Bay in around 28 minutes. Expect to pay more than $100 for the taxi. Bear in mind, this may be cost-efficient if you have more than one passenger as taxis usually charge for the car, not the number of passengers.

The taxi area is outside the arrivals hall on the left hand side. However, to be clear, if you’re considering a taxi, get a quote based on the size of your group and amount of luggage and book one in advance. Ballina BNK Airport website lists 15 providers that you can choose from. In this instance, I’d recommend you speak to your hotel for a recommendation if you don’t want to trawl through the long list.
