Review: Radisson Blu Gautrain Hotel, Johannesburg

The Radisson Blu Gautrain is located in Sandton Johannesburg. It’s certainly suitable for business travel, but it doesn’t lack comforts for visitors like me. This review covers all the basics: service and room quality, a clear picture of what to expect.

Radisson Blu Gautrain Location

The Radisson Blu Gautrain is very well located for business travellers working at any of the nearby financial buildings. It’s perfect too for tourists, for the simple reason it’s so close to Nelson Mandela Square and the Sandton City Mall, both for shopping, iced coffees and a good spread of restaurant options (I liked Big Mouth for sushi and tried Fishaways for fish and chips).

When I visited this Johannesburg Radisson, there was still a lot of construction work meaning any walking or running you were planning to do would be a bit of a problem. The hotel does run a shuttle service at regular intervals to Sandton City Mall and it might be advisable to use that.

Hotel Review: Bedroom & Facilities

There was no room ready on my arrival (I was super early) but within an hour one was ready.  I had chosen a standard double using reward points from Club Carlson.  It was perfectly big, plenty of room for studying at the desk and the bed is comfortable.  I had asked for hypoallergenic pillows, but got goose down.  I still slept for 10 hours my first night!

The size of the workspace underlines that many people use this hotel for business.

The TV channels are in a mix of languages and CNN and Sky News should suffice for American/Irish/British visitors.  There’s also four or five movie channels.

There is an in-room safe in the wardrobe on the right and a drinks prep area.

Pretty standard – but nicer than usual mugs!  Also housekeeping come in every day to replenish the (free) water bottles

Hotel Review: Bathroom

The bathroom is in a pretty standard porcelain colour, but it works and it was clean and fresh.

The products are of reasonable quality – can’t complain!

Radisson Blu Gautrain: Food & Drink

If you don’t want to go out for your meals, you can eat at the Radisson Blu Gautrain restaurant. Everything is based around the Central One Restaurant & Bar, where you can get the breakfast buffet (for an extra fee), enjoy a coffee or drink, or settle in for dinner. Honestly, Central One gets a 3.5/5 on Tripadvisor but it’s totally fine for nights you don’t want to go out. Venture to Trumps Grillhouse for steaks or sushi at Big Mouth in Sandton if you have time to head out.

Hotel Review: The View

However, it’s the view that’s simply the best! From the higher floors, there’s a beautiful view across Johannesburg!
